July Newsletter: Don’t Let Drainage — or Overwatering — Wreck Your Yard
We’ve had our fair share of rain lately — and it’s creating a perfect storm for drainage problems and overwatering issues. If your yard is staying soggy longer than it should, now’s the time to take a closer look.
Why Proper Drainage Matters
When water sits too long, it can:
- Damage your foundation and hardscaping
- Kill plants, grass, and trees
- Invite mosquitos and pests
- Leave parts of your yard unusable
We’ve already helped several homeowners this summer solve these problems with grading adjustments, French drains, catch basins, and more.
Don’t Forget About Your Irrigation
Even if you have a great irrigation system, all this rain means it might be doing more harm than good right now. Overwatering can lead to fungus, root rot, and wasted water.
Make sure your timer is adjusted, your rain sensor is working, and your system isn’t watering on top of already saturated ground.
If you’re not sure — we’re happy to come take a look!
July Landscape To-Do Checklist
July in Acadiana brings the heat and the rain — which means your landscape needs some extra attention this month. Here's what to keep an eye on:
Drainage Check
- Watch for standing water after rain
- Look for areas where water isn’t draining properly
- Clear debris from gutters, downspouts, and drains
Irrigation & Watering
- Adjust your irrigation schedule (you may not need as much water with all this rain)
- Check that your rain sensor is working
- Look for signs of overwatering like yellowing grass or mushrooms
Shrubs & Flowers
- Trim shrubs to keep them tidy and healthy
- Deadhead annual flowers to promote new blooms
- Pull weeds before they take over your beds
Lawn Health
- Treat for chinch bugs, armyworms, or fungus if needed
- Apply fertilizer only if your lawn is actively growing and not saturated
- Keep your mowing height high to protect the grass from heat stress
General Clean-Up
- Remove fallen limbs, leaves, or debris
- Fluff mulch if it’s compacted from the rain
- Add mulch where needed to help with moisture control
