The schedule for your irrigation must be changed immediately!! As I write this article, the average temperature has dropped to the low 80’s. The days are showing signs of becoming shorter. We are receiving generous amounts of rainfall. The results are that our lawns and flowerbeds are becoming saturated and over watered. I often see more damage to the lawn and plants from too much water rather than too little.
The watering program should be reduced to 1-2 days per week. Your turf type sprinkler heads (watering lawn areas) should operate for 45 minutes per cycle. The spray type heads (generally watering shrubs or small lawn areas) should operate for 10 to 15 minutes per cycle.
I am amazed that as often as I share this critical information, I still find sprinkler systems that are improperly programmed. So my quest to provide the wisest landscape clients in Acadiana with the most up-to-date, beneficial, researched and proven technical information continues. Your sprinkler system is a tool that must be managed. When the weather patterns change, the sprinkler watering schedule must be changed, quickly. Do not waste water. Change your schedule today.
